PM Modi in Nigeria: In Abuja, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu awarded Prime Minister Narendra Modi the title of grand commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on Sunday. After Queen Elizabeth won the award in 1969, Indian Prime Minister Modi became the first foreign dignitary to win it. The most recent honor is the 17th foreign honor that any nation has given to PM Modi.
When Modi accepted the GCON award he said, “This award will keep inspiring us to take the India-Nigeria strategic partnership to new heights. I want to sincerely thank you, the Nigerian government, and the people for the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), Nigeria’s national honor. I gratefully and humbly embrace this honor. Me dedicate this honor to the close connection between Nigeria and India as well as to 140 crore Indians.”
PM Modi went on to say during his speech, “Cooperation, goodwill, and mutual respect are the foundations of India-Nigeria relations. Together, as two thriving democracies and dynamic economies, we shall strive to benefit the citizens of both nations. Social and cultural diversity is our identity and our strength in both nations.”
Bilateral talks on potential new areas of collaboration
In addition, PM Modi mentioned that the Nigerian president’s visit to India last year strengthened ties between the two countries. “A new dimension has been added to our relationship with President Tinubu’s visit to India last year,” the Prime minister stated. In-depth talks were conducted today to expand and improve the collaboration.
“We have discovered new opportunities in the fields of small and medium-sized state businesses, fintech, energy, agriculture, security, and the arts. Special attention will be given to skill development and capacity building in accordance with the needs of the Nigerian people as a close and reliable partner.”
“The Indian diaspora’s residents in Nigeria are crucial ties in our relationship. I sincerely thank President Tinubu and his administration for taking care of them.”
India-Nigeria Ties
PM Modi’s visit marks is the first time an Indian prime minister has heated Nigeria in 17 years.
Since 2007, India and Nigeria have maintained cordial bilateral ties with increasing corporations in the areas of military energy and the economy. India’s standing as a development partner has been strengthened by more than 200 Indian businesses. Investing more than 27 billion in important Nigerian sectors.
