BRICS Summit 2024: On the fringes of today’s BRICS meeting at Kazan, Russia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping will have their first bilateral discussion in 5 years. This however follows major actions taken by China and India to resolve in neighbouring countries border issue.
Following an agreement between the two nations to resume routine petroleum along the line of actual control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. PM Modi and Xi Jinping met for the first time in 5 years.
On Tuesday, Indian foreign secretary Vikram Mishri released the following statement. “I can confirm that there will be a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping tomorrow on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit.”
Just a few months prior to the military statement at Galwan in June 2020, which resulted in numerous casualties. Modi and Jinping last spoke in Mahabalipuram Tamil Nadu in 2019.
BRICS: What is it?
Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are the members of the BRICS alliance. Brazil, Russia, India, and China made for the inaugural BRICS summit in 2009 after the group was founded in 2006. A year after South Africa joined.
The coalition wants to break the Western Monopoly on politics and the economy. Members alternately host the summit once a year during which the group discusses and determines priorities. This is supposed to be the 16th year.
Following the applications for membership, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates were invited to join the summit in 2023. Early others have formally joined, but Saudi Arabia did not.
On the same location, Argentina received an invitation declined after President Javier Milei, who was elected in December, branded on a platform of strengthening ties with the West.
The BRICS summit is being attended by whom?
Tuesday’s summit opening was attended by almost two dozen World leaders. Leaders of BRICS nations. Among those attending the summit are South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

- In the central city of Kazan over 20 world leaders from China India Turkey and Iran are meeting. To talk about topics like the war and the ongoing Middle East crisis. And the creation of an international payment system led by BRICS.
PM Modi urges “single-minded focus” in the fight against terrorism
At the 16 BRICS summit in Russia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also urged all countries to have a single-minded commitment and firm support in the fight against terrorism. Stating that “double standards” are not acceptable in this regard.
During the speech, Modi also emphasized the need to take active steps to stop young people from becoming radicalized.
