Sonam Wangchuk Released after 36 hours of Detention

Sonam Wangchuk, a Ladakh climate activist who was freed on Wednesday after spending almost 36 hours in custody, said he has been promised a meeting with the president or prime minister to discuss his issues soon by the Union home ministry.

Sonam Wangchuk was detained by the Delhi Police on Monday at the Singhu border when he and 150 other protestors from Ladakh attempted to enter the capital. Prohibition orders, in effect for the duration of October 6 over the capital, cast a shadow on the proceedings. Sonam Wangchuk was detained after police intervened during his “Delhi Chalo Padyatra.” Which he was conducting with followers from Leh towards the national capital.

“The incarceration caused some challenges for us when we arrived in Delhi, but everything happens for a reason. And we are happy that more people heard our message about environmental protection. Sonam Wangchuk stated. “We have sent a memorandum to the government advocating for Ladakh’s protection under constitutional provisions to preserve the Himalayas.”

The march started on September 1. The purpose was to pressure the Centre to start talking to Ladakh’s leaders again. Their demands are centered around a four-point agenda. That includes statehood, inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, a separate Lok Sabha seat for Kargil and Leh, and a dedicated public service commission with an expedited recruitment process.

Supporters Blockade National Highway Near Leh

Tension has been raised in the Union Territory of Ladakh. A climate activist is leading a campaign to protect the local ecology after Delhi Police arrested him at the Singhu border. On Monday night he and his supporters were marching to the nation’s capital. On National Highway 1, approximately six kilometers from the village of Fiang. Roughly two dozen demonstrators erected rudimentary blockades the following morning, including sticks positioned atop overturned traffic cones.

Foreign tourists have reportedly been stranded by the blockades. It is believed that, for the time being, the situation between these blockades is strained but peaceful. Images depict a roadblock with at least 100 cars and 50 trucks parked behind the demonstrators.
