Derek O’Brien Suspended for Misconduct During Winter Session

Derek O’Brien, a TMC MP, was suspended for the rest of the winter session on Thursday in the Rajya Sabha due to “ignoble misconduct”. After adopting the motion for suspension, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar stated that O’Brien had entered the House Well and was “continuously shouting slogans gesticulating at the Chair,” disrupting the business of the House.

Along with other opposition members, the TMC MP was yelling chants calling on Union Home Minister Amit Shah to enter the Parliament and address the security lapse that resulted in two people jumping from the visitors’ gallery into the Chamber of the House. Despite being ordered to leave, he remained inside the House.

“Derek O’Brien has been suspended as of right now. We have the right to bring up people’s concerns at the well. There is nothing wrong with Derek O’Brien.” TMC MP Dola Sen stated, “We as the opposition brought up this issue and raised slogans because the PM, Home Minister, and Treasury are silent on the security breach issue.”
