The Maha Kumbh Mela will take place at Prayagraj, beginning in January 13 and ending on February 26, 2025. Thousands of pilgrims from all around the world attend this Holy gathering. This year Mela is expected to attract over 40 crore worshippers. The Kumbh Mela is deeply steeped in Hindu mythology, with its origins traced back to the Samudra Manthan (Ocean churning) narrative, in which gods and demons collaborated to get the Amrita.
This Holy occurrence is also included on UNESCO’s representative list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity. There are four different types of Kumbh Mela: Purna Kumb, Ardh Kumbh, Maha Kumbh, and Kumbh Mela. Each of them has its frequency and astrological significance.

The Maha Kumbh Mela is the primary Hindu-oriented celebration, with Kumbh representing the season of spiritual rebirth. It has been observe that on certain days of the festival, the positioning of planets is doubly beneficial in enhancing spirituality, making the venue vital for religious ceremonies.
Maha Kumbh Mela 2025: Key Rituals
Shahi snan (Royal bath) is a ritualistic bath taken in sacred rivers by organization leaders such as Naga Sadhu and other holy men. It is believed that this act will wash away sin and acquires merit in the eyes of the lord.
- Sankirtan and Bhajans: it involve people dancing and singing hymns, hills, and chants, which spiritualise the surroundings.
- Yoga and meditation: Most pilgrims practice yoga and meditation for their physical and psychological well-being.
- Spiritual Discourses: Expert interpreters in this field are invited to talk and discuss philosophical and/or religious topics for the benefit of the congregation.
Yogi Adityanath’s Preparations for grand event in Prayagraj
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath updated ANI on the preparations for the Maha Kumbh Mela Prayagraj. “This time, we’re building 30 pontoon bridges, with 28 already completed. The remaining two will be ready within the following several days. We are also preparing a 12-kilometer-long temporary ghat (riverfront). So far, over 7,000 organizations have registered, and over 1.5 lakh tents have been set up for visitors,” he stated. He emphasize that preparations are moving quickly and that people are really excited about this event. The Maha Kumbh Mela will be held at Prayagraj (previously Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh, from January 13 to February 26, 2025.
Difference Between Maha Kumbh And Kumbh Mela
The Maha Kumbh Mela is held once every 12 years. The spectacular event indeed marks the end of the 12 rounds of the 12-year Kumbh Mela. According to the devotees, taking a holy bath in the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati reverse during this time will boost their spiritual strength.
On the other hand, the Kumbh Mela is held every 3 years. It is celebrated in 4 locations: Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik, and Prayagraj. This is a smaller skill festival than Maha Kumbh.
