Directed by Nilesh Krishnaa and starring Nayanthara, Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food debuted in theatres on December 1 and was made available for viewing on Netflix on December 29. A man named Ramesh Solanki filed an FIR against the film’s makers, and a few days after the movie’s premiere on the site, it was removed.
The Movie Annapoorani Tagged as “anti-Hindu”
“This anti-Hindu film Annapoorani has been released on Netflix, produced by Zed Studios, Naad Studios, and Trident Arts, at a time when the whole world is rejoicing in anticipation of the Pran Pratishtha of Bhagwan Shri Ram Mandir,” wrote Ramesh on X on January 6, sharing the complaint he had made. For “hurting religious sentiments,” he urged the Mumbai police to file a formal complaint.
Additionally, he wrote a description of the incidents that upset him. Stating, “A Hindu Poojari’s daughter offers Namaz to make Biryani.” This film promotes love jihad. Actor Farhan convinces the actress to have meat by pointing her that Bhagwan Shri Ram ate meat as well. Nayanthara, Jai, Nilesh Krishna, producers Jatin Sethi, R Ravindran, Punit Goenka, Zed Studios Chief Business Officer Shariq Patel, and Netflix India Chief Monika Shergill were also named in the case.
Zed Studios Apologizes
On January 10, Netflix took Annapoorani off of their platform as a result. Vishwa Hindu Parishad received an apology from Zed Studios along with a notice that the movie would not be available on the site until the offensive material was altered. As co-producers of the movie, we sincerely apologize for any difficulty and hurt caused to the religious feelings of the Brahmin and Hindu communities. We also hope that this will not be the case. About Annapoorani
Annapoorani narrates the tale of a driven lady from a traditional family and community. She struggles to believe in the conventional values that have been instilled in her since she was a young child and follow her passion. The film portrays a pleasant friendship between Nayanthara’s Annapoorani and Jai’s Farhan, without delving into their love bond. Renuka, Karthik Kumar, Sathyaraja, Achyuth Kumar, and KS Ravikumar all play important roles in the movie.
Parvathy Thiruvothu Criticizes
Reacting to the studio’s decision to withdraw the film from Netflix, Parvathy said on her IG stories. “A dangerous precedent being set. Left, right, and “center” censorship will continue until we are unable to breathe. Nayanthara has not yet responded to any comments about the controversy.
The idea was echoed in a couple more tweets. “The removal of Annapoorani from Netflix is upsetting. I realize that there is a problem with freedom of expression, but this is really terrible. This creates a very unfavorable precedent going forward. A Twitter user wrote, “If we’re removing films that hurt groups of people, then what is animal?”
