Xiaomi SU7 built its first car shockingly quickly. The Chinese smartphone maker announced its automotive ambitions in March 2021 and began selling the EV earlier this year. We got to look at the car recently in India, and here’s a lowdown.
Xiaomi SU7 design
Xiaomi hired Li Tianyuan, a former BMW designer best known for his work on the iX electric SUV, as a consultant on the project. Former BMW design chief Chris Bangle was also hired.
Looking at the design, Xiaomi has pulled cues from other electric sedans, such as the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S (this is supposed to be closer to a competitor of an international – for example, this would rival the Model. The headlights take after those of the McLaren 720S and tinted rear glass combined with an adjustable rear spoiler further dials up proportions. It also comes with 19-inch alloy wheels and frameless doors.
Features
Being a Chinese EV, the SU7 is also quite feature-rich. The doors unlock by tapping the NFC card (no keys here), and then we make our way into a waiting car. The steering wheel also gets a heating element, and there is the 7.1-inch flip-up instrument cluster that wakes up when you switch on the car. Up front, the seats are electrically adjustable and feature ventilation and heating.
Xiaomi’s Hyper OS powers the huge 16.1-inch touchscreen infotainment screen, and we did not find a glitch using it during our time with it. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to play around too much as the system language was Chinese. The cabin is constructes well overall, and the inclusion of soft-close doors uplifts its premium factor.
ADAS
One plus point for Xiaomi is its roots in tech rather than car manufacturing like a host of traditional automakers. There is one LIDAR (the camel-like hump over the windshield) and 11 high-definition cameras sprinkled throughout, which enables ADAS level two functions.
Xiaomi SU7 powertrain
It is sold in multiple motor configurations, but the one showcases in India (SU7 Max) is an all-wheel-drive model with two electric motors: induction at the front and asynchronous at the rear. As a result, the combined output will be 673hp and 838Nm, enabling the EV to produce—allowing it to accelerate from a standstill to 100kph in just 2.78 seconds. It should deliver up to 800km of range, NEDC.
Xiaomi SU7 Neo launch price in India
Currently, the SU7 is limited to sales only in China, where its prices start from 215,900 Yuan. Go up above even a LEXUS ES250 at up to 299,900 CNY. The company officials did not disclose any data about other countries’ expansion, at least for a few years, but this may be introduced in India. Xiaomi already sells a number of “smart” devices. When we asked about the possibility of further expansion. They said that, like their phones before it, Xiaomi wants to make sure its first smart TV is rock-solid.
