Tesla Car: Tesla recalls 1.68 million EVs in China for free repairs of faulty latches.

Electric car brand Tesla, led by Elon Musk,Tesla recalls 1.68 million cars in China for a remote software upgrade. Free repair of faulty trunk latches will be offered in vehicles, the announcement said late Tuesday.

The recall is for a number of imported Model S and Model X vehicles. They’ve also recalled Tesla Model 3 and Model Y cars produced in China from October 15, 2020 through July 17,2024.

An Associated Press report in January quoted the recall notice that an unlocked trunk lid could open while driving, which would distract drivers. However, the notice fails to indicate whether any Tesla vehicle was said to be involved in these incidents.

U.S.-based EV maker Tesla will rectify the issue itself through a remote software upgrade orchestrated by China’s State Administration for Market Regulation.

The regulation stated that the issue would be addressed in a remote software upgrade by the US-based electric vehicle maker.

Tesla has a major manufacturing and sales base in China. In July, Tesla cars were even added to a Chinese government purchase list. Tesla also became the only foreign-owned nameplate on an EV car brand buying list posted by one of China’s provinces. The news quickly gained traction on Chinese social media sites, with many pointing out the “close relationship” Tesla and CEO Elon Musk have with China.

In 2023, Tesla built around 947 thousand cars at the Shanghai Gigafactory. Though, the brand also sent some of these cars to Europe though most were used locally. Yet, even as the automaker slashed prices and introduced low-interest financing last month, net income slipped on declining revenues. China’s BYD has been nipping at Tesla’s heels over the past few quarters. That is troubling for Tesla, as it was China’s handsomest customer last year providing nearly a quarter of its total revenue.
