Land Rover Defender Lineup Redesigned in India

The V8 and PHEV powertrains have been discontinued, leaving the Indian lineup of the Land Rover Defender with only two engine options spread across seven variants. But the Defender is still available in all three body styles—90, 110, and 130.

Defender’s new price range: Rs 1.04 – 1.57 crore! Before this update, prices ranged between Rs 92.70 lakh and ₹2.85 crore, ex-showroom.

Land Rover Defender 90 and tuning tweaks

For things even more confusing, the Defender had up to 5 engine options: a 2.0-litre petrol, a larger capacity (3.0L) petrol, ditto diesel form.. oh and don’t forget about that big V8 as well as the mild hev availability, which made use of an additional plug-in hybrid powertrain boasting just 2 liters yet with electric drive capability The 2.0-litre petrol and the 3. Of which, only liter diesel engines are on sale now.

Suppose you were interested in a Discovery Sport because of its 2.0-litre petrol engine. In that case, that’s now available exclusively in the X-Dynamic HSE trim level with the more interesting 110 body style – which effectively means it is your only option if you want an ICE-powered Disco Sport. The diesel 3.0-liter engine, however, is available on all three body styles and in one of its two trims: X-Dynamic HSE, the other being Sedona Edition.

The rejig sees the introductory price of a Defender edge up since the 2.0-litre petrol is no longer available on the base 90 body style. It also plunges the high-end price floor with it now that the option of V8 power is out. The recently unveiled Defender Octa V8 is available for order and will not be a standalone model in this class, with just 150 examples earmarked to head to India.

That’s just partial model spec allocation rationalization from the sound of it. We’re told only top-selling engines have stayed on sale by our dealer sources. Defender remains a full import and is not built locally like the sister brand flagships Range Rover (one) and Sport. Land Rover has also started deliveries of the locally assembled Range Rover Sport from today onwards.
