Telangana Tunnel Collapse Updates: This Saturday marks a week since about eight people were trapped during excavation work when a piece of the under-construction SLBC tunnel collapsed. As scientists from the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) confirmed the stability, officials chose to cut through the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) while simultaneously clearing the concrete debris and massive mud mound. Rescue crews continued their search on Friday for the eight people trapped in the Singareni Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel in Telangana’s Nagarkurnool district, with no signs of progress.

What Exactly Happened in Telangana Tunnel Collapse?

On Saturday, a portion of a roof collapsed on the under-construction Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) in Telangana’s Nagarkurnool district. As construction resumed, approximately 50 people entered the tunnel. They had traveled 13.5 kilometers within the tunnel when the roof fell. Eight individuals, plus two engineers, who were in front of the machine became trapped. However, 42 others raced to the tunnel’s outside gate and emerged. A few workers sustained minor injuries while fleeing the tunnel, according to another worker, Obi Sahu, who is related to Sandeep Sahu, one of the stranded laborers.

The South Central Railway (SCR) has joined rescue attempts to locate eight workmen. Those who have been trapped in the collapsed Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel in Telangana for the past six days. A senior official said on Friday that railway personnel had brought unique machinery to help clear metal debris. That however had been a key stumbling block in rescue efforts.

A Sridhar, SCR’s chief public relations officer, noted that the railway has the capability in cutting heavy metals with modern instruments like plasma cutters and Broco cutting machines. The Nagarkurnool District Collector asked for their aid in clearing iron and steel debris from the tunnel. The SCR responded by recruiting two teams of metal-cutting professionals.

Senior Officer’s Statement on Telangana Tunnel Collapse

An officer from the rescue team revealed the scale of the mission, stating, “We initially deployed 20 personnel. Yesterday and today, the total has risen to 200. Last night, there were 35 staff on-site; now there are 50, with another 50 expected to arrive by midday. We are deploying approximately 200 members, all of them are from the Singareni tunnel rescue squad.”

A senior police official confirmed that metal cutting and debris clearance were underway. A rescue team entered the tunnel at 7 a.m. on Friday and continued dewatering work. Telangana Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy stated on Thursday that the rescue would be accomplished within two days.
