Sanjay Roy, the main suspect in the August 9 rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the article Medical College and Hospital, was found guilty under three sections of Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), according to lawyers.
Anirban Das, the additional district and session judge, delivered the verdict at 3:00 p.m. in a crowded courtroom, stating that the quantum of punishment would be released on Monday. “The minimum penalty for your crime is life imprisonment, and the maximum punishment is a death sentence,” Recharge told Roy, who claimed innocence.

According to Partha Sarathi Dutta, the lawyer of the central bureau of investigation, which investigated the incident, Sanjoy Roy was found guilty under sections 66 (rape), 64 (causing injury resulting and death), and 103 (1) (Murder) of the BNS.
