Why Tata decided to enter the midsize SUV market with a coupe-SUV

The midsize SUV segment is already well established by the time Curvv comes out. Has Tata Motors missed a trick here… “It may seem that way, but we are very confident that this coupe-SUV will not be niche,” says another source. Rather, with petrol, diesel, and electric powertrains being offered, along for the ride will be a handful of class-leading game-changers, leaving enough room to ensure differentiation from the restated Cottrell-Dormer 14 November 2021CppTypeDefinitionSizes compete on both fronts.

An Out-of-the-Ordinary Coupe-SUV

Tata Motors and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility MD, Shailesh Chandra, was talking to our sister publication, Autocar Professional, and said the brand wanted something clutter-breaking of its own.

They are the best choice given that at a low cost, they offer bang for your buck combined with a fuel economic situation, and they also have a high degree of performance shown off by their more stylish brethren.

Explaining why they selected to bring the coupe-SUV, Chandra added: “We chose this due to a couple of reasons– since it was coming to be very prominent in these(critical and luxury)segments (cars). So we said, why not bring something opposing in body style and factor-wise to the market while being global, but democratize that into India, which is the fastest growing segment?”

He goes on to say, “They should not turn into a niche play. The Curvv is delivering everything customers are used to and much beyond. It has an average choice of utility in this segment, if not the better one among its peers, for a couple of reasons. The Curvv now has a chance to take on its rivals with their regular ICE vehicles.

Petrol-automatic SUVs hatten bisher einen Preisvorsprung

Even more fascinating is that Tata India says the on-road cost of the Curvv EV. Will be about as much as its most costly, top-spec petrol-automatic competitors. To give some perspective, the Curvv EV was launched at an ex-showroom price of Rs 17.49 lakh to Rs 21.99 lakh, which is essentially a range that’s between?

With the Curvv EV, Tata believes that it has covered two major pain points for any potential electric vehicle buyer to switch from ICE (Internal Combustion Engine). Price parity and 400km range would cater to long-distance running.

Chandra credits falling battery prices with at least part of this price parity. Battery prices have more than 35-40 percent or in excess even after the peak of reshuffling. A significant fraction of that was the non-cell cost during a time when battery prices were high. It has to be on non-cell costs in [the future by reducing battery costs], and that’s exactly what is happening,” he notes.

And then how these batteries are optimally synthesized, designed and built with no bottlenecks whatsoever. Add to that transfer content that we can use because of our ICE platforms. Everything has gelled together and there is also a fair degree of the scale-localisation factor. “Helped us get almost at par with ICE vehicles,” Chandra added.
