IND vs. ENG 1st Test: In the inaugural Test match at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, England destroyed the Indian batting order on Day 4 and defeated the hosts by a margin of 28 runs.
Indian hitters were forced to falter and lose steam by English spinners, particularly Tom Hartley, who took seven wickets in his debut. England’s Ollie Pope nearly reached a double century in the second innings. India was out of the game in 69.2 overs after managing just 202 runs. In terms of first-inning deficit, this is India’s largest-ever comeback by a visiting team on Indian soil, and their fourth home loss in 48 Test matches.
Day 1 saw England make 246 runs after winning the toss, with Ben Stokes (70) and Jonny Bairstow (37), scoring the most. Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah each claimed two wickets, while Ashwin and Jadeja claimed three for India. Thanks to the efforts of Ravindra Jadeja (87), KL Rahul (86), Yashasvi Jaiswal (80), and Axar Patel (44), India scored 436 in response to England’s 246. Joe Root claimed four wickets for England, Tom Hartley and Rehan Ahmed both claimed two, and Jack Leach claimed one.
England’s Ollie Pope (196) came dangerously close to hitting a double century in the Second Innings, and the other batters were equally impressive. Bumrah grabbed four wickets for India, Ashwin three, Jadeja two, and Axar Patel one. But when facing English spinners, particularly debutant Tom Hartley, who claimed seven wickets, Indian batsmen performed appallingly. Joe Root and Jack Leach each took one.
The second Test between India and England will begin on February 2 at the ACA-VDCA International Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
